Can You Repair Alloy Wheels?
Alloy wheels are a thing of great beauty, especially when they’re all shiny and glisteny and new from the manufacturer.
But like most other parts of a vehicle, constant contact and impact from running over roads (and off-roads, if you’re in Utah!) can lead to dirt, dust, and even damage forcing its way onto your beautiful wheels.
Alloy wheels need expert treatment to restore and repair damage. They first need to be bead-blasted back down to the bare metal (sounds scary, we know, but this is the right way to repair a wheel). The wheel will then usually be run on a CNC (computer numeric control) lathe to smooth out any deeper damage to the underlying metal.
Even deeper scratches can often be repaired through welding and then being lathed down to create a smooth finish flush with the rest of the wheel.
To prevent a layer of corrosion from forming, the wheel must be immediately primed.
It’s very important that priming, painting, and applying a clear-coat finish happen in a substantially dust-free environment, or you’ll end up with a finish speckled with dust particles!
Alloy wheels can often be repaired, but it takes an experienced professional to do it.
