I Have Low-Profile Tires on My Truck - How Do I Repair Wheel Rim Damage?
Low-profile tires are all the rage at the moment, with trucks and SUVs particularly falling under the spell of their slimline elegance.
The combination of big wheels and small tires doesn’t always bode well when you throw in the aggressive nature of the road. Regular tires have room in their structure for some extra ‘give’, so they tend to bow slightly around the outside edge of your wheels or rims, shielding them somewhat from assault by gravel and loose asphalt. Low-profile tires don’t have this benefit. By nature of their slim build, there is no in-built ‘give’ in them and so they can’t offer the same protection of a regular tire. So wheels can easily and quickly get scuffed up and damaged by loose stones and detritus on the road. And heaven help you if you’re someone who actually uses their truck or off-road vehicle AS an off-road vehicle! The assaults come from all angles, and slimline tires continue to look pretty while your wheels are massacred.
But they’re so pretty! I hear you cry mournfully. Ah yes, indeed they are, and you shouldn’t have to skimp on style just because your wheels MIGHT see a bit more damage than normal. But at the same time, you should have a plan for how you’re going to address this damage when it happens. Because nothing says ‘NOT pretty’ quite like pockmarked, chipped and peeling wheels, even against the backdrop of a gorgeous slim tire.
